A historical diorama exhibition showing 85 years of Kobe history will take place from January 3 to January 9. The exhibition celebrates the 85th anniversary of CO-OP, which was founded in this city in 1921. The dioramas, at a scale of 1:7, were made by Osaka based artist Nanjo (63), who is famous for this kind of art.

Diorama

Displays include city views of the 1950’s, destruction wrought by WWII US fire bombing and the collapsed CO-OP headquarters after the disastrous earthquake of 1995.

On January 17, it will be 12 years since the quake devastated Kobe and surroundings. Nanjo’s hope is that the diorama showing the earthquake will help in teaching the lessons learnt from this dramatic event to the children born since the quake. Dioramas showing older historical events must do the same to keep memories alive.

Diorama

“I don’t just want to stir nostalgic feelings,” said Nanjo in a recent interview with the Kobe Shimbun, “I want people to look hard at the realities hidden by the face of history.” Diorama scenes therefore also display the flea markets and prostitutes of the early post-war period as well as the survivors of the earthquake receiving food at evacuation centers. In the background radio recordings describing the events will be played.

There are also opportunities for children to experience old Japanese games. Entrance is free.
