13:30 – 14:00 Ontvangst

14:00 – 14:10 Welkomstwoord door Consul-Generaal Wols

14:10 – 15:00 ´*Chemistry and the Future of Sustainable Energy’, Lezing door Prof. Dr. Mark Koper, Leiden Institute of Chemistry, Catalysis and Surface Chemistry*

In the decades to come, mankind will have to make a significant shift in the way it deals with our planet’s available resources, and in particular in our use of energy. It is not difficult to argue that the sun is the only sustainable source of energy available to us, role in harvesting, storing and releasing energy. In discussing the various scientific challenges ahead of us, Prof. Koper will start from a historic discovery made by Paets van Troostijk and Deiman in Haarlem in 1789, using a Leyden jar.

15:00 – 15:15 Koffiepauze

15:15 – 16:15 ‘*Current Status and Perspective of Artificial Photosynthesis’*, lezing door Prof. Dr. Shunichi Fukuzumi, Dep. of Material and Life Science, Osaka University

In order to solve energy and environmental problems that is becoming more and more serious, we should not rely on a traditional source of energy such as fossil fuel or nuclear power, but there is a need to develop an artificial photosynthetic system that can produce energy by itself for only the amount of energy needed. Artificial photosynthesis system with the power of chemistry is composed of light-harvesting molecules, charge separation molecules, reducing catalyst from water, oxidation catalyst from water, and reduction catalyst from CO2. In this lecture Prof. Fukuzumi will introduce the current status and the future prospects of his research on artificial photosynthesis system, how each process works and how they are combined.

16:15 – 16:25 Slotwoord door Robert Rijken, Economische Afdeling, Consulaat-Generaal Osaka/Kobe
