Himeji City is organizing its second “The Matsuri Yatai in Himeji” Festival on Saturday June 4 (in case of rain June 5). Matsuri Yatai are the huge wooden festival floats that are carried by men in loin cloths. In Himeji the beautifully decorated yatai are thrown up into the air while men shout in unison. Quite a feat as they weigh at least a ton.
This festival is not really a religious festival as matsuri usually are, but an event specifally set up for tourists. As a result you can get some spectacular views. Seven yatai, carried by about 100 people each, are taken down Himeji’s main drag to congregate in front of the imposing castle. This is the only time that you can see yatai in front of Himeji Castle.
