Nederlandse Vereniging in West Japan > calendar
Currently a Special Exhibition takes place in Tekijuku , Kitahama Osaka until Sunday June 12. Mr. Ueda offers a round tour for the occasion.
This is an excellent occasion to learn about the Japan-Nederland historical relations. Osaka citizens are very proud that we were the centre of Dutch studies and also one of the most advanced medical centres of the world level in 19th century.
Tekijuku website http://www.osaka-u.ac.jp:80/en/guide/about/tekijuku/index.html
It is my pleasure to organize guide tour of this event. I would like to explain in English to Dutch friends.
When: Saturday 11 June at 10:30 meeting at the entrance of “Tekijuku”.
Entrance fee: ¥250.
After Tekijuku visiting traces of small pox vaccination at the Institute and Sumitomo copper factory (one of the main export item to the Nedeland in Edo period) and von Siebold stayed there.
12:30 end of the tour
For those interested a lunch can be taken at the “OUDE KAAS”, which is very near by. Unfortunatly Ueda-san has an appointment in the afternoon.
Tekijuku is the house of Ogata Koan. The house itself is already extremely interesting because it is one of the few traditional houses in Osaka. It was built in the Edo Period (1603 to 1867).
Koan Ogata (1810 – 1863) was a Japanese doctor who started a school in his home/clinic to disseminate Western medical science, the so called Rangakku (“Dutch Studies”). Out of his school, the Tekijuku, in 1938 Osaka was born. many of his students went on to play leading roles during the Meiji Period. Among them:
Fukuzawa Yukichi – Founder of Keio University
Ryoun Takamatsu – Spread modern medicine in Japan
Sano Tsunetami – Founder of the Japanese Red Cross Society
Otori Keisuke – Introduced Western military and political ideas
Takeda Ayasaburo – Introduced Western military architecture
Omura Masujiro – Founder of the modern Japanese military forces.
It is no exaggeration to say that large parts of modern Japan were founded in this house.
